In 2022, we ran a photography competition to refresh the images being displayed in Minehead's Open Air Gallery. The theme of the photography competition was 'Minehead - Then and Now'. The goal was to celebrate Minehead's heritage and history, as well as its current beauty and character.
We received dozens of entries from budding photographers, as well as some historical photographs of Minehead back in the day. Photographic entries included images from events, photographs of Minehead's seafront and surrounding scenery, as well as the harbour and town.
We selected the winning entries and also worked with Minehead Museum who kindly allowed us to access their archives to select intiguing photographs of Minehead from decades ago.
The winning entries were announced in the West Somerset Free Press, West Somerset's local newspaper, and online via social media. The photographs are now displayed on the Open Air Gallery on Minehead's seafront for all to enjoy. The competition entries are mixed with a variety of historic photographs from the museums archives.
We hope you will enjoy viewing a selection of the photographs below.
With thanks to Minehead Museum for their assistance in accessing historical photos from their archives.
Impact and Outcomes
29 entries into the competition were received, with 12 being selected to feature in the Open Air Gallery, amongst historical photographs of Minehead in the past from Minehead Museum's archives.
This project has boosted the appeal of the seafront to tourists, who regularly stop to enjoy the photographs while ambling along the seafront with icecream in hand. We also hope this project has helped those in our community who have their photographs featured in the gallery to feel more connected to Minehead, and to feel proud of the beautiful town they live in and its rich history and heritage.
