Blossoms of Minehead: A Community Art Installation

Creating Together

Throughout July and August, Maya from Minehead & Coast Development Trust (MCDT) and James from the National Trust visited local groups and worked with families to create something truly special — hundreds of handmade paper and crochet blossoms.

These blossoms were then carefully attached to fallen branches gathered from the forest floor in Lorna Doone Valley. Piece by piece, they grew into a stunning collaborative art installation, proudly unveiled at the Minehead Bay Festival 2025.

The artwork is more than a beautiful display. It celebrates the abundance of nature while reflecting the spirit of collaboration in our community. Each blossom tells a story of people coming together — weaving creativity, joy, and connection between one another and the natural world we share.

As a small charity, MCDT is dedicated to enriching the people, place, and nature of Minehead. Creative collaborations like this sit at the heart of what we do, helping us discover new ways to connect more deeply with each other and the landscapes around us.

The installation’s journey doesn’t end here. From spring 2026, it will be reinstated in the National Trust greenhouses at Lorna Doone Valley, where visitors can enjoy it once again as part of the National Trust’s nationwide Festival of Blossom.

This project wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our wonderful community and partners:

  • The National Trust team and volunteers at Lorna Doone Valley for partnering with us, and the Fyne Court team for bringing blossom-inspired arts activities to the festival.
  • Minehead Eye for welcoming us to run a blossom-making session with children at their Summer Holiday Club.
  • Little Fishes Toddler Groups in Porlock and Minehead for letting us make a joyful mess with spin-art flower activities.
  • Minehead Women’s Institute, and especially Lorna, for creating so many beautiful crochet blossoms to add to the installation.

Together, we’ve shown that when creativity and community meet, something truly beautiful can bloom.
